Course Overview

This course explores Adverse Childhood Experiences, also known as ACE’s and is designed for those who are working with children and families to help understand the impact of ACE’s.

Course Information

The Adverse Childhood Experiences course was developed by Clinical Psychologist and Paediatric Neuropsychologist - Megan Fowler, of the Hand to Heart Project. The Hand to Heart Project works with both parents and health professionals to enable a deeper understanding of the scientific underpinnings of a child’s neurodevelopment, and subsequent psychological and emotional growth.

What Will You Learn?

  • The first part of the module will explore what ACEs are and why they matter
  • We will look at both international and recent New Zealand research
  • Then, we will delve into the neuroscience behind ACEs and examine why stress can be damaging to a child
  • The module will conclude by looking at the tools that clinician's need to be ACEs aware, as well as the protective factors that are known to help mitigate the effects of adversity in childhood
